Exotic wood has become a favorite decoration for the home of many people.  These exotic woods sometimes come from rare tree species.

Exotic woods are favored by many because of their inherent natural beauty and durability.  But the use of exotic wood has sparked environmental issues as well.

Many environmentalists have qualms about trees being taken out of the shrinking tropical forests.

There are many regulations on exotic wood trading.  For example, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) prohibits certain species of trees from being traded.

Many trees need permit before being secured for exotic wood production.  The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has set some very specific guidelines for countries in trading exotic woods. Accredited certifiers for exotic wood trading like the US-based Scientific Certification Systems and Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood Program assess logging and wood working companies on their adherence to sustainable forest management policies.

Many responsible logging and wood working companies have limitations as to the number of trees harvested for exotic woods.  There are also specific areas were harvesting are allowed.  Sustainable trees harvesting in forests is an intricate business.  Improper harvesting can lead to having invasive species take place of certain valuable trees species.

The exotic wood industry is a huge industry that has helped many people make a living.  But a balance must have to be maintained between economics and environmental conservation.

One of the major key to striking this balance is for the consumer to make a thorough background of the supplier of exotic woods they are buying from.  If they found out that the exotic wood was acquired through illegal means, they should report to the authorities immediately.
